Reading Gay Men’s Book Club

Review for

“Holding the Man” Timothy Conigrave.

An example of how good the group is at getting me to read stuff I would never have chosen, but enjoy when I do. Actually, if I'd realized it was an AIDS memoir I would probably have decided it was too depressing & made an excuse to miss that month. Fortunately I didn't realize. It starts a bit like a gay romantic fantasy, set in a culture which speaks English but was surprisingly unfamiliar to me, & then gets harder edged. It's very frank, considering everyone of significance was around to read what he said about them... apart, of course, the one who really mattered. Very moving & not really depressing at all. And lots to talk about - I'd recommend it to read by yourself or in a reading group.
